Company description.
Drop-in ready.
SoundSense is an iOS sound awareness app for deaf and hard of hearing users, built at Rochester Institute of Technology alongside the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. The app recognizes the specific sounds that matter in a user's life, understands context like time of day and location, and scales alerts to urgency, all entirely on-device, with no audio ever leaving the phone. SoundSense is free on the App Store, with paid upgrades for power users and organizations planned to follow.
Short version (tweet length): SoundSense is a sound awareness iOS app for deaf and hard of hearing users. 100% on-device. Built at RIT with NTID.
The basics
in one place.
Aaron Guss,
founder.
Aaron Guss is the founder of SoundSense. He is a graduate student in the MIS program at the RIT Saunders College of Business, with minors in Artificial Intelligence and Entrepreneurship.
SoundSense started as a class project and continued because the feedback from the NTID community at RIT was consistent: existing sound detection apps treat every sound the same, and the people who depend on them deserve better. Aaron is building SoundSense as a product, not a demo, in close collaboration with deaf and hard of hearing users at RIT and beyond.
Aaron is available for interviews on accessibility, deaf-community product design, on-device machine learning privacy, and student entrepreneurship.
